Conversations for the Crown
As part of Durham Public Schools’ Crown Act Week, Black Girls for Liberation hosted Conversations for the Crown, a vibrant community event celebrating the beauty and cultural significance of Black hair. Designed for Black Girls for Liberation members, their families, and the broader community, this gathering highlighted the richness of Black hair and its central place in Black culture.
The event featured workshops led by a local hair braider who shared braiding techniques, hair care tips, and strategies for maintaining healthy hair with protective styles. An empowerment and affirmation session invited participants to reflect on their personal experiences with natural hair and challenge negative narratives. The day also included catering from a Black woman-owned business, creative activities like painting, and intentional spaces for community-building and celebration.
